Non-discrimination Policy

Tennessee Career Institute is committed to the principle of equal employment and educational opportunities for all. The School does not permit discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identification or handicap in the administration of any educational program or activity, including participation in, or receiving the benefits of, admission to or employment in such programs or activities. Qualified handicapped persons will not be excluded from employment or participation in educational programs.

The commitment to equal opportunity applies to all aspects of recruitment, employment, and education. TCI complies with nondiscrimination regulations under Title 45, Pt A6 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

Requirements for Admission

The school admits as students only persons having one of the following:

  • A certificate  of graduation from secondary education (High School Diploma)

  • General equivalency diploma (GED).

Applicants seeking admission into an instructor training program must possess one of the previous certifications AND have held a master cosmetology license in Tennessee for at least 18 months.

After an interview, the prospective student completes an application for enrollment.  The admissions process proceeds with the completion of any necessary pre‑entrance forms.  Accepted students will be notified of orientation for new students which is held before the start of classes and which provides the student with opportunities, regulations and policies of the school.

Continuing Students

Prior to the end of each four-week grading session, students will be notified of schedules for the following session.  A review of the previous four weeks progress is reviewed with the instructor.

Former Students

Any former student who withdrew in good standing must meet the requirements of admission for transfer students. Any former student who was terminated by the school for reasons other than satisfactory academic progress will be readmitted only after showing cause to the school director that the reason for the original termination has been rectified. Each case will be reviewed by the school director in consultation with the student’s former instructors. Students who were terminated by the school for reasons other than satisfactory academic progress and readmitted will be placed on probation for one month.   Re-entering students will be charged a $100.00 re-entry fee.

Transfer of Credits

1) From other schools -- A student who has earned credits at another accredited school may have those credits considered for transfer provided:

  • They are comparable to required subjects in which the student is enrolled at TCI (a decision that is entirely judged by TCI)

  • The course was accredited by a US Department of Education approved accrediting agency

  • The Student received a grade equivalent of "C" or better for the courses he or she wishes TCI to consider for credit transfer

  • An official transcript is received by Tennessee Career Institute directly from the registrar’s office of school previously attended

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Credit transfer requests for less than 250 clock hours for Esthetics or Cosmetology or for less than 140 clock hours for Nail Technology will NOT be considered.  These hours are required in each of the programs of study prior to the student’s ability to perform basic services for credit at the clinic level.  If the student cannot demonstrate competence in these basic theoretical and practical hours, that student must start at the beginning of the program.

  • No amount of credits will be accepted for more than 50% of the applicant’s program of study at TCI (for example, no more than 750 hours will be accepted for a program of 1500 hours).

  • In ALL cases of requested credit transfer, the sole decision of their acceptance rests with TCI.

  • An evaluation of competency will be given for the student to demonstrate proficiency to our standards prior to any official granting of credit transfer.

2) To Other Schools -- Since every institution has its own policy regarding transfer of credit, it is not possible to guarantee transferability of any particular course offered at Tennessee Career Institute.

3) Transfer Within the School  Students wishing to transfer from one program to another within the institution should request a meeting with the director for the purpose of determining the transferability of hours already completed.
